Río Grande de Térraba, Costa Rica

Río Grande de Térraba, in the southern Boruca region of Costa Rica, has been threatened with a series of three proposed hydropower projects since the 1960s. Local Brörán peoples and other Indigenous communities have spent their lives protecting the free-flowing river, which is of spiritual and cultural significance to them. The river is also an important source of nutrients for the RAMSAR protected Térraba-Sierpe wetlands. The Térraba remains un-dammed thanks to regional protection efforts. Read about this river here: https://journals.librarypublishing.arizona.edu/jpe/article/id/2998/
